2011 Big Shark's Tour of St. Louis

 

 

 Saturday and Sunday April 16th and 17th, 2011

Two Days, Three Events, $5000+ in Cash and Prizes

The 2011 edition of Big Shark's Tour of St. Louis brings the excitement of bicycle racing and the best local, regional, and national athletes to three venues around St. Louis. 

  • Saturday morning the action begins with the Carondelicious Circuit Race. An expanded circuit in Carondelet Park will provide a worthy challenge. Tasty!
  • Saturday afternoon racers will test themselves against the clock as they fly on the flats of the beautiful Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in North St. Louis County. 
  • Sunday the finale as racers duel it out at the Delmarvelous Criterium to determine the Tour of St. Louis overall champions.

  Event # 1- Saturday, April 16th

Course Description: An undulating 1.3 mile circuit course along the beautiful lakes in Carondelet Park in South St. Louis City. The course is winding, wide open, with silky smooth pavement. The course has two mild climbs and an uphill finish.

Registration: Race day entry fee is $30 (includes $3 rider insurance surcharge).  Registration will be open at 6:30 am. Juniors race day fee is $10 per event.

Event RulesJunior age groups will be scored separately and medals will be awarded to the top three in each age group.  Masters prize money will be scored for combined categories.  40+ and 50+ racers will be scored separately for MOBAR points. Overall Masters prizes are for combined categories.

 Event # 2 -  Saturday Afternoon, April 16th

Course Description: A "scenic" 9 mile out and back course over the flat Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in North St. Louis County.  This extremely smooth, fast course offers racers an opportunity to get aero and crank up the power. The course will be open to traffic and riders must stay to the right.  The good news is the road is lightly traveled and the course will be well marked and staffed with volunteer course marshals / flaggers.  Aerobars, disc wheels, power meters, and other hi tech gadgetry are recommended.

Registration:  Race day entry fee is $20 (includes $3 rider insurance surcharge). Time trial starting sequence will follow the order of registration.  Pre register on-line to get the early time slots (slots are limited to the first 240 paid riders).  Race day registration for any remaining time trial start times will be open Saturday morning at the Delmarvelous Criterium alongside regular registration.  (note...You will not be able to register at the TT venue). 

Event Rules: The first rider will begin at 3:01 pm. (Note:  Men Cat 3 and Men Pro 1/2  riders that plan to race in their respective crits earlier in the day should plan on start times around 5:00 pm or later.)  The last rider will go off no later than 7:00 pm.  Racers will start in one minute increments.  Riders must be staged and ready to go at least 5 minutes before their start. At registration you will receive 1 or 2 bib numbers, one number to be used for both criteriums AND a second sequential starting number for the time trial. In the event of a missed start racers will be staged after the last registered rider. You must report to the Start if you miss your time slot.  Medals will be awarded for the Masters 40+, 50+ and 60+ age groups.

Event # 3- Sunday, April 17th

Course Description: A Flat .8 mile criterium around the wide open streets of the near North Side. Martin Luther King Blvd, 19th St., Delmar(velous) Blvd., 23rd St. The course is wide open, mostly re-paved, fast and very Delmarvelous.

Registration: Race day entry fee is $30 (includes $3 rider insurance surcharge).  Registration will be open at 6:30 am.  Juniors race day fee is $10 per event.  If you already have a number you do not need to check-in.

Event Rules- Juniors age groups will be scored separately and medals will be awarded to the top three in each age group. Masters prize money will be scored for combined categories.  40+ and 50+ racers will be scored separately for MOBAR points. Overall Masters prizes are for combined categories.

Pre-Registration-  Save $10 and register for all three events for $70. You can pre-register online at www.sportsbaseonline.com. There is a surcharge for online registration.  Pre-registration closes at midnight, April 13th.

Directions and Course Maps

The Carondelicious Circuit Race

From the East or West go South from downtown St. Louis via Highway 55 and take the Loughborough exit.  Turn right (West)-the park is on your right. Turn into the Park and make your way to the Western border near Holly Hills. Follow all of the signs or simply keep your eyes open. From the City/Highway 40 you can take Grand south until you hit Holly Hills, then turn right.

The Big Bottom Time Trial

The course is located at the Columbia Bottoms Conservation Area at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. To get to the Park you will need to take Broadway North to Riverview North. Cross I-270 on Riverview and the road changes its name to Strodtman Rd. Park is prior to the sharp uphill left turn.

The Delmarvelous Criterium

The course is located just north of downtown St. Louis- accessible and easy to find. From Highway 40 or 44- head North on Jefferson to Delmar Blvd. Head East to 23rd Street. Bingo!

Payout details

Points will be awarded to the top ten finsishers in each category.  The points will be awarded equally for all of the events.  From 10 to 1.  In order to qualify for the Overall each athlete must compete in ALL three events.  Masters 40+ and Masters 50+ are competing for ONE combined overall, although they will also be scored separately for the MOBAR competition.
